The IntelliCAD Network

Hi,
Last week I was at the ODA conference (Open Design Alliance) and I discovered that BricsCAD and ZwCAD created their own versions of ARX (AutoCAD's object oriented development platform). BricsCAD calls it BRX and ZwCAD will probably call it ZRX because the name DRX is claimed by the ODA, who also developed an ARX version.

Why are these guys not joining there development efforts instead of each one creating such complicated software by there own?

And where exactly is IntelliCAD in this?

A. BricsCAD does not actually ship IntelliCAD, they have their own software which is not IntelliCAD, they use the libraries from the ODA.
B. ZwCAD has developed their own add in for ARX which they did independently of the ITC, they used the libraries from the ODA
C. the ITC is currently working on a 7.0 version which utilizes the libraries from the ODA.

The ODA is the one central fixture in all of this, they are the base library everything is developed from.

The question of why they did not join forces is because they want to gain a competitive advantage over the other competitors out there, even for a brief moment in history.

Hi Mr. ProgeCAD, (Btw, do you have a real name?)

Is ProgeCAD developing PRX for its competitive advantage? I think joining forces would be best.

How can BricsCAD first be an IntelliCAD implementation and then start competing IntelliCAD? Aren't they supposed to bring their improvements back into IntelliCAD? Didn't they sign such an agreement before they got the IntelliCAD source code? I bet the BricsCAD core is still 90% IntelliCAD.

Will IntelliCAD 7 use the ODA DRX libraries? I hope they will.

Siem: "I bet the BricsCAD core is still 90% IntelliCAD."

I am sitting in the conference room of the Bricsys office in Gent with Luc de Batselier (Bricsys CTO) sitting across me. I can confirm that the ITC code in the current version of Bricscad V9 is close to 0%. I am also aware of other related details which I cannot disclose at this point in time.

I think they could use a Southwest Distributor/Sales/Demo/Training Person?

Thanks Deelip, it's good to hear that from an dependant consultant. I hope you'll find the time to write a comparing article about the differences between ARX, BRX and ODA's DRX. That would be of great value to CAD developers all around the world.

BTW it was a pleasure meeting you at the ODA conference!

Sorry, I meant "an independant consultant"!

The ITC requires it's members only to submit back to the ITC those fixes to defects which are not substantial changes to the Code base. If a member rewrites an entire portion of the source code they are not required, but are encouraged to contribute. Most members understand they are stronger together than apart in the respect of code development.

With that said, the ITC is working together with its members to develop IntelliCAD 7.0 which will have ARX type functionality built in among many other architectural changes and improvements.

Actually progeCAD is my first name, IntelliCAD is my family name... :-)

I think it is not really good the CAD developers (ITC members) develop arx separately. An application developer like me faces with a lot headache. Each platform have a different syntax, a different bugs, and a lack of manuals (usually they use AutoCAD references as base but didn't check their functions carefully that leads to misunderstanding). For this reason I hate ZWCAD API because almost each new build brings me more redevelopment.
BRX and GRX (from Great Star) are much better because they mostly store ARX syntax with some alterities.

Intellicad’s API will be called IRX
FYI, Bricscad will load and run DRX as well as BRX, though I prefer to write with BRX

Hi all Gurus and not too much ;) having missed some months from the last update, who knows what are the plans? or what are the news? about the release of IRX, or wahtever it be called, from IntelliCAD or from any of its members, excepting Bricsys who i suppose are still being a member of the ITC, releasing its proper and really compatible flavor of ARX?

P.D. hope it is readable.

The ITC is not saying anything and neither are its members. Which goes to reinforce the belief of third party developers like myself that things are not going as planned.

Hi all,

Today ZWSOFT China made their ZRX available for testing. It is supposed to be a good alternative to AutoCAD's ARX.

ZRX is part of ZWCAD 2010 Professional Beta, which can be downloaded from www.zwcad.org.

Please, have a look at it and let me know your experience.
